double standards

so irked right now... my JTE just turned and said to me, "I heard you got drunk at the Izuhara Junior High enkai."

?!!!??!!!

first of all, i'm not going to deny the fact that i indeed did drink a lot at that party, and that was the longest i've ever sustained a buzz. however, what probably bothers me the most about this is that the JTE that just said this to me heard it from another teacher at this school, whose wife is a teacher at Izuhara. what ever happened to the whole "what happens at an enkai, stays at an enkai" policy??? i feel so violated right now.

my JTE further went on to say to me, "I think that's your reputation now. "

dude... the ONE night on this island that i drink a little more than usual, and bam, i now have a "reputation"?? what?!!!!

damn double standards. make me so angry!!! you dont see me running around telling everyone who i saw groping a hostess at my second party after my welcome party, because you're supposed to forget about what happens at enkais! you're not supposed to talk about it! that violates the basis of the whole thing! arrrrggggggh!!

yeah, still angry.

Yeah, same thing happened to me at drinking parties with co-workers. My company's gossip chain was horrible too. Whenever I did anything with a co-worker outside of work, everyone immediately knew and commented on it.

Sucks huh?

dude, totally sucks!!! a lot of the teachers on this island have wives or husbands at other schools. i can think of at least 5 couples that i know that work at separate schools, and their kids go to yet another one of my schools. psycho.

anyway, since i'm exposed to a large portion of the population of my town, i guess word spreads even faster. what pisses me off is that it's okay for japanese people to drink, act stupid, and get away with it. or maybe it's a guy thing. guys can do that but girls cant. no matter what, it's messed up that they're talking about me, you know?

blarrrrgh.

well, to be honest - what were you expecting? not trying to be mean or anything, but you're new, you're a foreigner, and you're on an island - people are going to be up in your business, whether you like it or not. yeah, it sucks, but I think having no privacy is something we'll all need to get used to, especially those of us not in big cities.
